At those levels, it seems to be different, but in the levels of consciousness, yid is definitely lower, much lower. Can there be an experiencer of the unconscious or is that automatically excluded by definition? Q: R: There could be an experiencer of the unconscious in the meditative state. That's the whole point you see: usually the unconscious lumps 30 together and works together with the rest of the whole thing, but meditation practice begins to sort them out, and you begin to see the functions of mind completely, clearly -- which part is which part, you know.

The other type of celebration is exercising the intellect which is also related with what you've been practising, what everybody's been practising, doing. So I think if you have that sense that whatever is happening is up to date and right there then you begin to lose the mystique of it, of the beyond- reachable situation. Otherwise, you feel like you are attending an auction in which people are bidding several million dollars and you only have three dollars in your pocket, and you lose contact more and more.

R· It involves all the consciousnesses but also it doesn't involve all the 28 consciousnesses. It has some other element than just these. That seems to be the conflict between Hinayana and Mahayana. Mahayanists would claim that there would be another mind which is higher mind, higher intelligence, and Hinayana would say this is the only thing there is, that higher mind cannot be reached. That seems to be the conflict. You mean the Hinayanists say there are these eight types of consciousness and that's it?
