After reading them, Haley discovers that these notes reveal more of Malcolm’s personal ideas and unique thoughts. When Malcolm finally begins to open up about his mother and more personal aspects of his life, Haley begins to build a foundation for the book. The epilogue sheds more light on Malcolm’s complexity, contradictions, and vulnerability. Haley also touches on a lighter side of Malcolm. Though his mood usually remains grim when telling childhood stories, when he tells Haley about arriving in Boston, he laughs, recalling how out of place he looked.

Amazed by how many words are listed in the dictionary, Malcolm does not know where to begin: Finally, just to start some kind of action, I began copying. In my slow, painstaking, ragged handwriting, I copied into my tablet everything printed on that first page, down to the punctuation marks. I believe it took me a day. Then, aloud, I read back, to myself, everything I’d written on the tablet. Over and over, aloud, to myself, I read my own handwriting. ” Malcolm immerses himself in books on a variety of subjects: linguistics, history, religion, biology, and literature.

Sammy the Pimp eventually contacts Malcolm’s old friend Shorty, who arrives to take Malcolm back to Boston. Chapter 9, “Caught,” is the last chapter before Malcolm undergoes his most significant transformation up to that point. The chapter dramatizes Malcolm’s downfall and depicts the depth to which he has sunk, juxtaposing this point in his life with the dramatic conversion he will undergo in prison. These years of crime are necessary for Malcolm’s personal growth and for the development of his ideology and intellect.
